How to Grow Strong and Long Nails

One of the most common questions I receive is how to get long and strong nails. I also see this question asked frequently in Facebook groups. This article will explain what has worked extremely well for me and others. However, keep in mind that each person’s body chemistry, genes, and lifestyle are different. It’s important to experiment and figure out what combination of the follow tips will work best for you!

Here’s the short answer: Use a jojoba-based nail oil, eat right, and be careful with your nails.

Here’s the long answer:

The #1 Way to Get Stronger, Longer Nails

Oil! Oil! Oil!

According to Ana at, oil is the glue that holds the layers of your nail together. She has thoroughly studied Doug Schoon’s book, Nail Structure and Product Chemistry, which I am now in the process of reading. Your nails are made of about 100 of layers of keratin and oil is what keeps them together. When your nails get too dry (not enough oil), then the layers start to peel apart. By the way….oil is also the solution to peeling nails. ;) With peeling, come breaks! The fewer layers you have at the tips of your nails, the easier they will break!

Here are my nails from three years ago. You can see I had short nails and terrible cuticles. (Not to mention terrible photography!)

(It still pains me to look at this picture…)

In an effort to help my poor, destroyed nails, I bought some Duri Rejuvocate.  Duri made my nails worse!! In fact, I first discovered when I Googled “Duri Rejuvocate reviews”. That day changed my life! I immediately purchased Ana’s jojoba oil based Pure Nail Oil and did the three day go naked challenge. (Basically, you go without polish for three days *insert gasps here* and oil your nails whenever they look dry. For me, that was like every hour.)

I’m sure you’re familiar with how my nails and cuticles look now, but here is a picture to refresh your memory. ;) (Please note that I don’t Photoshop my pictures. I don’t own Photoshop…so I just crop and wordmark and I’m done.)

To this day, I am still shocked at the difference this one little change made. I can’t recommend a jojoba-based oil enough! Keep in mind that it takes 4-9 months for your nails to grow out so if you start using oil today, the real benefits won’t be seen for a while. Your cuticles will have quick improvement, but fixing the peeling and breaking will take longer. It’s WELL worth the wait. Trust me.

Want long nails? Take care of your body!

In other words…eat healthy! When I’m eating right, I notice a huge difference in my nail strength and growth. And it makes sense! If your body is getting the right nutrients, then it will have spare ‘supplies’ to make better nails. As an added bonus, my hair also starts to look fantastic when I’m eating right. Hmmm….I think it’s time to start eating right again! LOL. I’ve kinda fallen off the wagon this past year…but I don’t want my nails and hair to look bad! Not to mention my waistline! :P

I won four GlitterDaze polishes in the recent Digital Dozen anniversary giveaway. This is Glitter Daze Awesomeness Overdose which is a blue and purple duochrome. The application was super easy and this is two thin coats.

The shift in this one is gorgeous. You can see toward my cuticle how dark of a purple it gets and then toward the tip it becomes a gorgeous blue.

Bliss Kiss Simply Satin Body Fluff Review

{Press Sample}{Purchased by Me}{Affiliate Links}

Much to my eternal dismay, Bliss Kiss is no longer selling the body fluff. My heart is still crying. Lately, I’ve been using SeneGence Shea Butter Body Cream or Hand Lotion as an alternative. A tub of the shea butter body cream is $30. You can order it here.

As many of you already know, I’m a huge fan of Bliss Kiss products from It’s my number one go-to cuticle oil. On top of that, the owner is super nice and amazing. What many of you don’t know is that I’m also obsessed with her body fluff.  Bliss Kiss Simply Satin Body Fluff made its debut last winter, I believe. (Don’t quote me on that date…) I immediately fell in love. It smelled divine and moisturized like a bad ass. Unfortunately, Ana wasn’t happy with the formula. It had a very low melting point which meant it was nearly impossible to ship. She took the fluff off the market, much to my dismay. I nagged her as much as I could and she kept telling me they were reformulating. I used my jars sparingly. I didn’t want to run out! Then, on the evening of my 30th birthday party, my dogs ate my last jar!!! OH GOD NO!!! I WAS OUT OF FLUFF!!! This was seriously a disaster. I emailed Ana begging her to sell me more! I didn’t care about melting points mumbo-jumbo! I just needed my fix!!!!

Well…fast forward to now! Ana has finally released a fluff again!! When I found out, I flooded her with memes such as these:

She gave me one jar of fluff but I also purchased two jars since I know I love it so much. SO what is this magical fluff? It’s a hand (and body) moisturizer that is excellent at its job. It has coconut oil in it which makes it smell super delicious. No wonder my dogs ate it!

It has a very soft and fluffy texture, hence its name. It looks like whipped cream! (Not recommended for use on top of cupcakes.)

On top of all these other magical qualities, it also absorbs super fast. This is essential for bloggers! You don’t want to look at shiny fingers, do you? But you also don’t want to see dry, cracked and acetone-eaten fingers!! Well Bliss Kiss fluff moisturizes really well and soaks in super fast. This photo, published earlier this week, was taken just a few moments after using this fluff. Do you see dry skin? No, you do not. Do you see overly shiny fingers. No, you do not! Isn’t that fabulous? In fact, I hope you don’t even notice my fingers at all because it’s supposed to be about the art on the nail!

I can’t recommend this fluff highly enough. If you get it and end up not liking it, then send it my way! LOL! I’ll use it for sure! Her site shows it currently as sold out, but she should be releasing some any minute now. So make sure to follow here on Facebook so that you find out when it’s back in stock! Then you can be addicted like me! You can get it at

FAQ’s: How to Care for your Nails and Paint them Every Day

I frequently get asked how I’m able to paint my nails every day. People are always worried about how much time it takes and the damage it might be doing to my nails.

Well there are easy answers to both those problems!! I was explaining all this to a colleague at work and she said, “You just changed my life.” Now I don’t expect this post will change everyone’s actual LIFE, but I do hope it will help as you’re getting into nail art and nail care.

First, let’s start off with how to take care of your nails. You could be the best nail artist in the world, but if your nails and cuticles are in bad shape, nothing is going to look good. There are three easy, peasy ways to make sure your nails are in tip-top shape!

1.) Eat right. I know, I know. This advice is given as a solution to nearly every problem in the world. But it’s so true! If your body is starved for proper nutrients, it’s not going to invest energy into building strong nails. It’s going to just try and stay alive! Eating a well balanced diet with good protein and lots of fruits and vegetables WILL make your nails healthier in the long run.

2.) Moisturize your cuticles! It’s no surprise that my favorite product is Bliss Kiss Pure Nail Oil. It’s inexpensive relative to other brands, smells great, is an indie product, and the owner is super nice. That’s all win-win-win! To see what a huge difference it made for me, click here. There are many other products on the market that also do a good job, but I like Bliss Kiss Pure Nail Oil The key is to find something that works well for you and then, use it often!

3.) Nails are jewels, not tools. Don’t use your nails to pick at things or use them as tools. Protect them! If you’re serious about keeping them long and healthy, you need to do right by them. Wear gloves when washing the dishes or cleaning. Don’t use them to pry things open!

Now, let’s talk about actually painting your nails on a daily basis. People are always so impressed that I paint my nails every night. The thing is, the entire process barely takes me over a half hour! That’s it! That includes removing the old polish, painting, AND drying time!! Wowza! That really is no time at all! There is ONE product that makes this quickness possible: An excellent top coat. I use HK Girl Top Coat. You can buy it here.

That’s it. In my experience, the base coat and type of polish doesn’t make that big of a difference. The top coat is what really makes a mani dry fast or not. There are others on the marked such as Seche Vite, that can also work well. My only complaint with Seche Vite is that I would get terrible tip wear (where the polish retracts from the tip of your nail) within a few hours. I don’t experience that with HK Girl, so it’s my few favorite.

Hopefully this post answered a few of your questions! If you have any more, please feel free to ask in the comments! I promise I read them all! :D

Pure Nail Oil 30 Day Follow-Up

Last month, I did a review on Pure Nail Oil. I did the suggested three day “go naked” challenge. You can read more about that by clicking here.

I wanted to give a follow-up on how much I’ve been liking this product! My cuticles and nails have never looked better.

Here is the picture I can’t keep staring at. This is my ‘before’ picture from the three day challenge. I can’t believe how dry, peeling, and unhealthy my cuticles look.

Here is the same hand, about a month later. The cuticles are happy, healthy and moisturized!

I am soooo happy with this product! I don’t feel like I need any other cuticle oil!

Pure Nail Oil Three Day Go Naked Challenge and Review

Throughout my travels on the internet, I discovered Anna is touting the wonders of her Pure Nail Oil, so I thought I would do the three day hydration challenge that she describes on her site. (Yes. A scary thought: Going three days without polish!!!)

I took before and after shots for you to see what happened.

Left hand:

Just 3 days after

Right hand:

Just 3 days later
The left picture is before and the right picture is after. Look at the horrid shape my right hand’s cuticles are in! Egads! That’s embarrassing!
Here’s what I notice: The whites of my nails look slightly whiter and just look healthier in general. The cuticles look better, especially on my right hand. This is most apparent on my pinkie nail. Three days ago, that cuticle was painful! Now it’s getting back to a healthy state.
The verdict: I will continue to use Pure Nail Oil. I think it’s definitely worth looking in to as your go-to nail and cuticle oil.
What do you think? Can you see a difference in my before and after shots? Have you tried Pure Nail Oil?
